AHA Statement: Regarding the exploitation of temporary foreign workers
The Alberta Hospitality Association (AHA) is deeply disheartened by the recent news regarding the exploitation of temporary foreign workers (TFWs) by the co-owners of Marina Dosa Tandoori Grill in Calgary. The actions described, defrauding vulnerable individuals under the guise of a legitimate immigration process, are unconscionable and contradictory to the values we stand for as a restaurant organization.
The hospitality industry depends on the dedication of individuals from all backgrounds, including those who come to Canada through temporary foreign worker programs. These workers deserve to be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect, not as targets for financial abuse.
AHA wishes to reiterate on behalf of its members that this is not common practice in the restaurant industry. The majority of restaurant owners and operators are hardworking, ethical individuals who strive to create fair, inclusive, and respectful workplaces. The behaviour outlined in this case is a betrayal not only to the workers involved but to the thousands of restaurateurs who aim to provide equitable and safe working environments for their employees.
We vehemently condemn these actions and call for continued efforts to protect all workers from exploitation. If any temporary foreign workers are unsure of their rights or need assistance, we encourage them to contact resources such as Service Canada (www.canada.ca) or TFW Hub (https://www.tfwhub.ca) for clarification and support. AHA also offers guidance and information for TFW employees and employers regarding their rights and obligations.
We would like to note that Marina Dosa Tandoori Grill is not a member of the Alberta Hospitality Association, and any member involved in this type or any other legal or unethical business practices would have their memberships revoked.
